The Turn: Transitioning Your Wardrobe as Summer Starts to Shift

Nobody wants to hear it in late July, but the light starts changing before the calendar does. The evenings arrive a few minutes earlier. The air has a different weight to it by 8pm. This isn’t the end of summer — it’s the turn, the two or three weeks where your wardrobe needs to start doing double duty before it fully commits to fall.

The mistake most people make is treating this as an all-or-nothing switch — packing away every light piece the moment one evening feels cooler. The better approach is additive: keep everything that’s working, and layer in two or three pieces with more structure and weight that can carry you from a warm afternoon into a cooler evening without a full outfit change.

“The turn of a season is not a deadline. It’s an invitation to edit.”

Denim is the easiest place to start. A heavier wash — still breathable, but with more substance than your lightest summer pair — works in both temperatures and photographs better in the changing light. Add a layering piece with more structure that can be carried, not worn, through the warm part of the day: a structured overshirt or light jacket that comes out only once the sun starts dropping.

Fragrance follows the same logic. As the air gets a little heavier, lighter summer scents can start to feel thin. This is the moment to reach for a fragrance with more weight — NOCTĒ Obsidian or Maison, both built to hold their own once the temperature drops and the evening gets longer. You don’t need to abandon what worked all summer. You need to let it evolve, the same way the season is quietly doing right now.
