The One Tech Upgrade Most People Skip (And Regret)

Walk into anyone's junk drawer and you'll usually find at least one dead power bank — bought cheap, charged twice, then forgotten. It's one of the most commonly owned and most poorly chosen pieces of tech people carry, mostly because it's treated as an afterthought rather than an actual purchase decision.

Here's what actually separates a power bank worth keeping from one that ends up in that drawer.

Capacity matters less than most people think — output speed matters more. A power bank rated 20,000mAh sounds impressive, but if it charges your phone at half the speed of a wall outlet, you'll still be tethered to it for an hour just to get to 50%. Look for at least 18W fast charging output (20W+ is better) rather than chasing the highest capacity number on the shelf.

Passthrough charging is the feature nobody mentions until they need it. This lets you charge the power bank itself while it's simultaneously charging your phone — useful for overnight charging setups or when you're plugged in at a desk all day. Cheaper power banks often skip this entirely, which means you have to choose between charging the bank or using it, not both.

Weight-to-capacity ratio is the real tradeoff. A massive-capacity power bank that's too heavy to actually carry daily just becomes a drawer item. For most people, something in the 10,000–15,000mAh range hits the sweet spot — enough for two full phone charges without turning your bag into a workout.

Check for multiple ports, not just one. If you're also charging earbuds, a smartwatch, or someone else's phone, single-port power banks become a bottleneck fast. Two USB-C or one USB-C plus one USB-A covers most real-world situations.

The pattern with the ones that end up abandoned is almost always the same: bought on price alone, used twice, then quietly retired because charging took too long or it ran out faster than expected. A slightly more expensive power bank that's actually fast and reasonably sized gets used for years. A cheap one becomes clutter within a month.
