The Art Behind NOCTĒ — Brent's Emergence Paintings and Brand Vision

Before there was a bottle, there was a canvas.

For more than thirty-five years, painting has been how I make sense of things I can't quite say out loud. Large-format, abstract, built in layers — colour laid over colour until something true surfaces underneath. That body of work became the Emergence Series: pieces that have hung in Winnipeg galleries, been donated to local organizations, and, without me fully realizing it at the time, taught me almost everything I now know about building a scent.

"A scent is just a painting you can't see — built the same way, in layers, until something true surfaces underneath."

Painting is a study in restraint. You learn early that the difference between a finished piece and a muddy one is almost always what you didn't add — the stroke you held back, the colour you let breathe instead of layering over. NOCTĒ started from that same instinct. Every fragrance in the house — Obsidian, Lumière, Maison, Crystal — began the way a painting does: with a single idea I wanted to protect, and the discipline not to bury it under everything else it could have been.

There's also a rhythm to working in series. The Emergence paintings aren't one piece — they're a conversation across many canvases, each one responding to the last. That's exactly how I think about NOCTĒ's collections. Obsidian isn't a scent, it's a starting note in a longer conversation the whole house is having about depth, restraint, and what it means to make something by hand, in small batches, without cutting corners to get there.

Shop Bam Online exists because I wanted to build things myself, from the ground up, the same way I've built a painting practice for three and a half decades — one layer, one batch, one decision at a time, with my own hands on all of it. NOCTĒ is where that instinct finally found a second material to work in.

If you've ever stood in front of a painting and felt something before you could explain why, that's the same reaction I'm chasing with every bottle. Not luxury. Not comparison to anything else on a shelf. Just something built with real attention, made small enough that I can still stand behind every part of it.

The Emergence Series continues alongside NOCTĒ — new work is in progress, with pieces being submitted to Manitoba galleries and grant programs this year. The two practices will keep feeding each other; that's the whole point.
