The Right Order: A Simple Guide to Nighttime Skincare Layering

There’s a moment most of us know well — standing at the bathroom counter with three or four products in hand, unsure which one goes on first. Layering skincare isn’t complicated once you understand the logic behind it, but get the order wrong and even good products underperform. The rule is simple: thinnest to thickest, water-based before oil-based, and always finish with anything designed to seal moisture in.

Nighttime is when skin does its real repair work, which makes the evening routine worth getting right more than any other part of the day. Unlike morning skincare, which has to compete with SPF and makeup, night routines have room to breathe — literally. This is when actives like retinoids and exfoliating acids do their best work, uninterrupted by sun exposure, and when richer creams can sit on skin for hours without needing to be touch-up-proof.

Night is not the absence of care — it is care with the lights turned down.

The order, step by step:

  1. Cleanse. Remove the day — sunscreen, makeup, city air. A gentle, non-stripping cleanser is enough; skin doesn’t need to feel squeaky to be clean.
  2. Toner or essence (if used). A thin, hydrating layer that preps skin to absorb what comes next.
  3. Treatment or serum. This is where actives live — vitamin C, niacinamide, retinoids, exfoliating acids. Thinnest consistency goes closest to the skin.
  4. Eye cream. The skin around the eyes is thinner and benefits from its own light layer before heavier products arrive.
  5. Moisturizer. Locks in everything underneath and restores the skin barrier overnight.
  6. Facial oil (if used). Oils sit on top, sealing moisture rather than delivering it — always last, never first.

A good way to remember it: if a product feels like water, it goes early. If it feels like a balm, it goes last. And when in doubt, apply from lightest texture to heaviest — your skin will absorb each layer properly instead of one product blocking the next.

None of this requires a ten-step routine to work. Three or four well-chosen products, applied in the right order, will outperform a crowded shelf every time. The goal isn’t more — it’s better sequencing of what you already have.
