The Order Your Skincare Products Actually Go In

Applying skincare products in the wrong order doesn't just reduce how well they work, it can cancel some of them out entirely. The general rule is simple once it's understood: thinnest to thickest, water-based to oil-based, so each product can actually reach the skin instead of getting blocked by a heavier layer applied before it.

Cleanser always comes first, followed immediately by anything water-based, like a toner or essence, while skin is still slightly damp. These thin formulas are designed to absorb quickly and prep the skin for what follows, and applying them onto dry skin instead of damp skin can reduce how well they're absorbed.

Serums come next, and this is the stage where order matters most, since serums are usually where the actual active ingredients live. A serum applied on top of a heavier moisturizer will mostly just sit on the surface instead of penetrating, which defeats the purpose of using it at all.

Moisturizer comes after serum, acting as a seal that locks in everything applied underneath it rather than a treatment step itself. This is also where eye cream typically fits, applied before the heavier facial moisturizer since the skin around the eyes is thinner and benefits from a lighter product reaching it first.

Sunscreen is the final step every morning, applied after moisturizer has had a moment to absorb. Skipping this order, or skipping sunscreen altogether, undermines nearly everything applied before it, since UV damage is one of the fastest ways to undo consistent skincare effort.

None of this requires more products, just applying the ones already in a routine in an order that lets each one actually do its job.
